What’s a Volunteer Sale and where can I host one?
It works like this: you take a box (or a few) of Amani products and sell the products to those in your network. Wondering where to host? The sky is the limit! We have had volunteers host house parties, set up booths at local spring markets, sell at churches and church conferences, bring product to their workplaces, college sorority houses and campus quads…anything you can come up with! As a volunteer, your involvement through selling Amani products is a key part of ensuring that Amani continues thriving and touching women’s lives in a holistic manner. The project is self-sustainable, so income generated through product sales provides support for the women and their families and sustains the growth and development of the Amani centers. Volunteers also have the privilege of sharing the stories of hope and transformation from women’s lives who have experienced true peace through products that go Beyond Fair Trade. Does it cost anything to host a sale?
Just your time! This offer is valid for those who are within driving distance of the AmaniDC shop, which means nobody pays shipping. Of course, you don’t pay anything for product. We just check out a box to you, you sell what you can, and bring the rest back to us.
What portion of the proceeds from my sale go back to the women?
We get asked this question all of the time, and we love answering it because it means our customers care about how their products are sourced. That’s what being a member of the Fair Trade Federation and a 501c3 is all about! Amani pays the women who work at our centers twice the minimum wage in that country. AmaniDC exists to create a US/local market for product that is made in Africa (each Africa center also has its own storefront where customers can shop on location). Additionally, an AmaniUS presence means that we are able to host fundraisers and awareness events for startup cash when Amani starts new Africa centers and projects. At the center of Amani is an enterprise to stitch and sell products that are beautiful, functional, and distinctive. Self-sustainability has set Amani apart since its early days. This core value continues to maintain Amani’s mission today. As a not-for-profit, Amani seeks to drive all growth back into the mission of the organization. Our pricing model guarantees that trainees are paid well and operating expenses are covered, while also ensuring that products sell and Amani can continue providing work for more women. Hosting a sale means that you are helping to maintain a US market for these products, which is hugely important to Amani’s model.
Use your talents and interests and networks as a volunteer.
It’s easy and fun, and a great way to volunteer for a beautiful organization that brings women of many backgrounds together. Use your specific talents and gifts to give back to a Amani: are you a good cook? Host a meal for friends where you feature and sell our kitchen products! Do you organize community events? Consider having an Amani table. Are you an artist? Think about hosting an arts exhibit night where you feature and sell Amani’s crafts besides your own. If you love women’s economic empowerment but volunteering regularly isn’t an option with your schedule, you hosting a one-time event and introducing Amani to your networks is enormously helpful to us in the work we do here.
What about the Pocket Dress?
We love them! And we love that you love them! Sell $250 worth of product at your sale and you receive a Perfect Pocket Dress as our thank-you gift to you. If you don’t love the patterns we currently have available, we can order you another in your size (it takes approximately 3-4 months between us ordering them and our receiving them—but it’s always worth the wait). Unfortunately, the fabrics and dresses are not customizable…they are each one of a kind!
